Translating Before this class was translating a word or phrase from one language to another. I would have described it as having someone to translate when doing business, or meetings. Or as a way to be able to communicate. Now it still is kind of that way to me but it's also meaning, and how that word is used in that language versus the other.
A way I can describe this is how that word is taken up by someone, or how it is used in that language. Translation can't always be a direct word-for-word thing, sometimes you have to describe what it means in a sense of a situation, or time and place. Google Translate for example is not always accurate, and when it comes to slang it's hard to transfer that to another language.
My parents commonly say pata in Spanish for feet. This word actually means duck....not feet. This word though is so used in my family that it's just how it means to us, and wouldn't be able to be translated by anyone.
